News and Events
Heath Gooch, owner of Molly Reeves Realty, LLC, hadn't completely furnished his new Germantown office when he decided to give 10 percent of his company's annual profits to the Memphis/Mid-South Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
Molly Reeves Realty opened in March, bearing the name of Gooch's 4-year-old daughter.
"Now she walks up to me and says, 'Daddy how did my company do today?'" said Gooch.
Gooch and his six agents focus mostly on home sales in East Memphis, Germantown, Collierville and Piperton.
A family friend whose whole family has had cancer was the inspiration for Gooch's decision to give to the annual cancer research benefit race, which is held in October.
"Three of four daughters and both parents had it. It's devastated the entire family," he said.
Gooch contacted Beth Washington, a Komen board member and sponsorship chairwoman for the Race for the Cure, and became a third-party event sponsor.
"A third-party event means giving a certain percentage of the profits for the race, which I think is very noble," said Washington. "He's also pulling in all of his vendors, his closing attorneys, his builders and other people that he works with."
Getting set up for the donation involved a vetting process by the Komen board and setting up a nonprofit bank account to collect the funds.
Washington said many third-party events are given by individuals who organize a sports tournament, gala or other social functions at which attendees donate to Susan G. Komen.
Gooch opted to donate a portion of his profits at the end of the year in lieu of an actual event.
Citing sales in September of almost $3 million, Gooch said he feels confident he will have a nice amount raised when he makes his first donation in December and hopes other smaller companies will join him in the effort.
Washington, noting that the main Race for the Cure sponsors are much larger companies such as Kroger, International Paper and Sam's Town, said there is definitely room for the smaller companies to contribute.
Last year, Race for the Cure netted almost $1 million, 75 percent of which funded Mid-South early-detection and awareness projects, while 25 percent helped fund national research programs through the Susan G. Komen corporate office.
"You never know whose money makes the difference," said Washington, who is also a five-year survivor of breast cancer. "It may be your donation that helps someone."
